Diigo Exploration

For today's assignment we were to research three articles focused on media, whatever that may be. By researching more on a topic of our choosing, we could learn more about the ways media enhances or hinders ones personal brand or portfolio. By doing this we can learn valuable skills moving forward as we begin to build our own portfolio websites, and start to really build our own brands for our future careers.

The first article I chose to take a look at was "27 Things to Put on Your Portfolio When First Starting Out" mainly because I am one of those individuals, who really doesn't see the need for a personal portfolio website considering my desired career. Although I can see how it can be helpful, I really don't see a lot of my audience careening towards that outlet so it's kind of something that I don't focus on. As such, this article gave me a lot to think about!

  1.  "Killer Site Design": By simply having something awesome to look at, regardless of content, you already make a valuable impression on whomever stumbles upon your page.
  2.  "A Blog": Although this may be pretty standard and possibly, common sense, at least for myself this is something that I think will be the reason I use my site the most.
  3.  "An Explanation of Your Process": This was a cool concept, as I am ALWAYS interested in how other writers go about getting their books written and finished. And I know that if it;s something I'm interested in, then there are plenty of others who would be interested in as well!

The second article I perused was "6 Portfolio Design Mistakes That Drive Me Nuts". Ever since starting this degree I've struggled with figuring out what my personal branding would even look like, so this article was really useful for future reference!

  1.  "Listing Your Age": To be honest, I don't think this is that much of a deal depending on the context, as for some people it can be really impressive for the work that's being out forth! I generally always list my age in some form or another, so I'll have to be mindful of that.
  2. "Lack of Confidence": This is something I can definitely see as being a problem! Particularly when it comes to the blogging aspect. Keeping in mind that it needs to be personal, there may need to be some boundaries set.
  3. "Blog Neglect": As stated above, I can see how my main draw to my platform would possibly be my blog, and as a previous blogger, I can definitely see how not maintaining a blog can really hinder yourself. So if at the end of the day I choose to have a blog at all, I'll need to maintain it on a regular and consistent basis.
The third article I looked into was "Blog Post Ideas: 100 Fool Proof Ideas For Your Next Blog". II figured any help I can get would be great!

  1. "50 blog ideas before you start": This is definitely not something I have ever done or thought to do. That's a lot! But it would make things a lot easier in the long run.
  2. "Tools": Something I discovered after speaking to other writers is the many awesome and useful programs that are available, that I would have never known of otherwise! Taking the time to share my own insights on useful tools would be a good idea as well.
  3.  "Experts": The idea of posting blogs focused on my favorite authors or researching and analyzing those in the industry or market is an appealing idea.
A useful article I think should be added to the Diigo resource file is "3 Years From Now If You Don't Have A Personal Brand, No One Is Going To Work With You" by Nicholas Cole. It makes a great case as far as the future and how business and employee management will change within the coming years. Like I stated before, I don't necessarily feel like I have much for a personal brand, but I can see how it'll be useful in the future.
